Thankful Friday (and just not because it is Friday)

With Thanksgiving less than two weeks away and many blog posts popping up about what people are thankful for, it is hard not to think about what I myself am thankful for.

One week ago today, I had a pretty major surgery which required me to stay overnight in the hospital and expect a 2-4 week recovery.  I was a little nervous about it and even wrote a letter to my kids just in case something went horribly wrong.  Well, I have to admit after only one week, I feel great and have pretty much fallen back into my normal routine (with the exception of running, I have walked every day since Saturday, but running may take another week or two).  My doctor prescribed pain medication which we never got filled.  And believe me, I am a big wimp; I would take pain meds if I needed them.  On Sunday, I even made an appearance at a friend's Eagles' football party.  But otherwise, I have had a very low-key week with lots of rest.

This past week really made me realize how lucky I am and how much I have to be thankful for.

>  We have been inundated with food, calls, and flowers.  I feel so blessed by all the supportive friends and family who really stepped up this past week.  They drove my kids where they needed to go, they made sure we didn't want for a single thing to eat, they visited and walked with me.

>  My kids have been extra helpful.  I came home on Saturday to a super clean house.  The kids have been helping Scott with household chores and taking care of our pets.  We've gotten caught up on all the shows that we record on DVR and they happily watched movies with me (they even popped the popcorn).  They promised that I wouldn't have to rake any leaves this fall.

>  Scott is the best!  Scott really took over this past week; he took care of everything for work (and sold two listings - woo hoo!), took care of the house and the kids, and even finished up a couple house projects so we could get our cars back into the garage.  He has been amazing and I am so blessed to be married to him.

>  My overall health is excellent, but I am grateful that we have health insurance that will cover this surgery.  Buying our own health insurance has always been a priority for us.  We could have had more things or more savings over the years if we chose not to have health insurance, but we probably would have lost the farm on this one.

I think it is easier to recover from setbacks when you have such a great support network and reasons to want to get out of bed and walk.  I am grateful that this major surgery has been nothing more than a minor blip in the road.

I have a close friend whose sister is dying of brain cancer.  I have a sister who is battling breast cancer.  Clients of ours just had a house fire (see yesterday's blog) and will be in temporary housing through the holidays and into 2011.  A senior at our local high school died this week (suspected overdose but it is really unknown at this point what was the cause of death).  The people of Haiti are trapped in a living hell with no relief in sight.

I am thankful that I can keep my problems in perspective.  I have a lot to be thankful for.
