Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, Philadelphia, PA - May 8, 2011

The weather couldn't have been nicer for the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia, PA on May 8, 2011.  Even though it required at 4:30am wakeup call, it was a beautiful day in every way possible.

For our 2nd year, we volunteered at the Wawa tent setting up and serving food to the 40,000+ walkers and runners participating in the Race for the Cure.  It is truly an emotional event to witness as thousands of men, women and children start their Mother's Day trying to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Along with my usual favorites of "Save 2nd Base," "Fight Like a Girl," and "The Booby Bunch," I saw a few new t-shirts this year including "Coconuts for Cancer" (complete with coconut bras) and "IMPACT: Make One."  There were two very cute teenage boys who simply took a black Sharpie and scribbled on their t-shirts, "4 MOM."  That one made me smile.

The saddest sign we saw was, "My Mom.  Last year, fighting for.  This year, in memory of."  That one almost brought me to tears.

By lunchtime, we were enjoying brunch on the patio at Illuminare and had our dessert of homemade gelato at Capogiro.  And just like last year, Scott made a terrific dinner for eleven of us (including his mom) at home to end our day.  This new tradition really makes for a perfect Mother's Day.
