This is
a program put out by PECO (Philadelphia Electric Company). Consumers sign up and PECO will come out to your house and install a PECO Smart A/C Saver (a digital cycling unit) device outside your home near your A/C unit.
During times of peak electric usage, a wireless signal will be sent to "cycle" the compressor units of those participating in the program. The fan continues to operate but the compressor does not. This helps PECO effectively manage periods of high demand. Most consumers participating in the program notice no difference during a conservation event.
The max amount of time that your compressor will be off is 15 minutes for every 30 minutes of the conservation event (typically very hot summer afternoons). Once the conservation event ends, your A/C returns to normal operation.
What is the benefit to you of participating in the PECO Smart A/C Saver Program?
Participants receive $30 off their electric bill for each qualified unit for each month of the cooling season - June, July, August and September - for a total savings of $120 per unit. In addition, you are using less electricity during peak times and that will help save on your electric bill as well.
We signed up for the PECO Smart A/C Saver Program this spring and even during our record-breaking temperatures of 100F a few weeks ago, we noticed no difference in the comfort level of our house. Depending upon our temperatures this summer, PECO typically has 13 to 20 days of high demand in which they will initiate a conservation event.
Participants may withdraw from the Smart A/C Saver Program at any time, but if they do so, they cannot re-enroll for a 12-month period.
