RainCamp Philadelphia is right around the corner on November 30th at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing. We highly recommend RainCamp; Scott and I went this past January in New York and will go again in a few weeks. How can we resist when it is in our back yard?
If you are attending RainCamp Philadelphia but are unfamiliar with the city, here are a few things going on if you have any extra time to spare...
For the history buffs, you can walk to the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall.
For the sports enthusiasts, you have to head south to the sports complex. The Eagles play December 2nd at Lincoln Financial Field against the Houston Texans. Right next door is the Wells Fargo Center where you can catch World Wrestling Entertainment on November 29th, the 76ers play against the Portland Trailblazers on November 30th, and the Flyers face off against the Boston Bruins on December 1st. Citizens Bank Park is also in the complex, but quiet these days since the Phillies season is over. Be brave if you go, Philadelphia sports fans are crazy!
For a more cultural outing, you can head in the direction of the Philadelphia Art Museum and run up the steps just like Rocky Balboa (how cultural is that?). Right next to the art museum, you will find the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Franklin Institute. The Franklin Institute is currently hosting the exhibit, Cleopatra - The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt. Fine dining can be found by the art museum at the Water Works Restaurant.
For the animal/nature lovers, a trip across the Delaware River will get you to the Adventure Aquarium, but if you prefer the Philadelphia Zoo, that is on the other side of town. Fairmount Park is good for walking or cycling but probably not the best choice for late November. Or simply head out your hotel and ice skate at the Blue Cross RiverRink.
For a true unusual experience, head to the Mutter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The museum has an unbelievable collection of preserved body parts affected by diseases and defects. Be sure to get a famous Philadelphia cheesesteak at Pat's or Geno's AFTER you go (unless you have a very strong stomach). If you go to Geno's, be sure to say hi to owner Joey Vento, a very proud American who prefers you order in English.
If shopping is more your style, head to Walnut Street and Rittenhouse Square for high end shops and restaurants. Le Bec-Fin in on Walnut Street, Parc Brasserie and Devon Seafood Grill are on Rittenhouse Square. But there are many many fabulous restaurants throughout Philadelphia. The Gallery at Market East is an indoor mall and nice if the weather is bad. If you are near the Gallery, head to Lord & Taylor (previously Wanamakers) for the classic Holiday Light Show which is shown daily (every two hours) from Black Friday through New Year's. This light show has been a Philadelphia holiday tradition since 1956.
If you are a real foodie, head to Reading Terminal Market or Chinatown. Plus, no food lover should come to Philadelphia and not stop for a gelato at Capogiro.
If you like shows, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts offers the Kimmel Center - Verizon Hall which is home to the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Perelman Theater which is home to PHILADANCO, and the Academy of Music which is home to the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet. You can also find shows at the Merriam and Forrest Theaters. On November 30th and December 1st, you can catch Jersey Boys at the Forrest Theater. World Cafe Live near the University of Pennsylvania's campus also hosts bands nightly.
Philadelphia abounds with energy. Just head to any of the city's colleges for great shops, food and entertainment. This includes the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Temple University. South Street has a host of funky shops and bars; it is definitely the place to go if you drink too much at the RainCamp after party and decide you want a tattoo or body piercing!
Things you won't want to do include visiting LOVE Park and Boathouse Row. While they are both famous Philadelphia landmarks that are very cool to see, there isn't anything to do there. And those fabulous Philly soft pretzels? They are one of my favorites right out of the oven, BUT when they have been sitting out on a vendor's cart in the open air and humidity all day, well, in my personal opinion, I would pass.
To meet fellow Active Rainers, head to a preparty hosted by Jeff Belonger, Come Party with the Forefathers, RainCamp Invades Philadelphia.
And lastly, if you go to RainCamp Philadelphia, be sure to look for us and say hello! You can even wish me a Happy Birthday (well sort of... my birthday is the 29th).
