The cat you see is our daughter's cat, we picked him up at a very nice home here in Lansdale PA that had a big sign out front "FREE KITTENS." This kind-hearted family had found a three-legged pregnant cat and decided to take her in. Tiger here is one of her offspring. That family still has the mother. Tiger is one of the nicest and coolest cats that you would ever want to meet.
The dog you see here (the black one) is our son's dog Bandit. If you have ever read the book, Where the Red Fern Grows, it makes a great case as to why every ten year old boy should have a dog. Scott and I decided that we wanted to get our son a dog for his 10th birthday. It was perfect timing, our family dog of 14 years had just died six months earlier and our kids (especially our son) were begging for another dog. Bandit is a great dog, loving, playful and full of energy; he has brought so much joy to our lives.
We found Bandit through a website, PetFinder.com. Bandit was only about six weeks old when a man had found him in the road and dropped him off at an animal shelter in Pennsauken NJ. You can't even imagine how excited my son was when we told him that we were going to NJ to take a look at a puppy. He fell in love instantly and Bandit came home with us a few days later.
The dogs you see to the right are Dutch and Bella. They belong to close friends of ours. Both came from animal shelters. Bella was a puppy and Dutch was about three years old when our friends took him in. Dutch had been severely abused and was very shy. Dutch and Bella stick together and seem madly in love with each other. Our friends have 2.5 acres of land for them to run, play and hunt down small animals (no squirrels on their bird feeders). Dutch is very loyal and loving to his new family. He has had a happy ending. Once I commented that Dutch was lucky to have found our friends, they quickly fired back, "WE are the ones who were lucky to have found Dutch!"
Lastly, this is Hutch. He is also pictured with our daughter and her friends, Bandit and Hutch's brother Starsky. Starsky and Hutch were two brothers from a litter of mixed breed dogs that ended up at a shelter near Lancaster PA. These two dogs are our dog's best friends. Whenever we travel or our friends travel, we watch each other's dogs. The dogs are very appropriately named as Bandit loves to be chased by Starsky and Hutch. Starsky and Hutch work together and will take Bandit down. Then they start all over again. It is hilarious to watch.
Our vet says that unlike the pure bred dogs, the mixed breed dogs all have great temperments. We have certainly experienced this to be true.
So if you are considering bringing a dog or cat home this holiday, we would encourage you to pass on the expensive "Designer Dogs and Cats" and visit a shelter. The perfect match for your family may just be waiting to be found.
